High gas prices mean more motorcycles on the road

Did you know that every 39 minutes, about 40 times a day, someone in the U.S. dies from a drunk driving crash?

Monday, we told you how law enforcement in our area will step up patrols to crack down on impaired drivers for the Labor Day holiday.

But, we found out for this KHQA FactFinder Report that officers will focus on motorcycles this holiday season.

In 2006, more than 13,000 people died in highway crashes that involved a motorcycle rider or driver.

41% of those motorcycle riders died in single car crashes because their blood alcohol level was .08 or higher.

That's why Illinois State Police, along with Iowa and Missouri law enforcement are teaming up for the weekend to keep you safe on the road.

"Driving on 2 wheels is a lot harder on 4 wheels for anyone under impairment, that makes it that much more difficult. Drivers of cars are not always looking for motorcycle, they're smaller and harder to see," said an Illinois State Trooper.

Here are some reminders so you and your loved ones can enjoy a safe holiday weekend.

Remember, if you're going to drink, plan a safe way home.

One way to do that is to choose a designated, sober driver.

If you are too drunk to drive, take a cab, public transportation, or call a friend or family member, so you get home safely, and keep others safe on the road.

And, if you ever see a drunk driver on the road, call 911 right away.
